One city, a dozen different wiring jobs
People say Sheffield is a big village, but for an electrician it is closer to a dozen different towns sharing a name. Steel-city terraces climb the hillsides, leafy suburbs spread out to the west, tens of thousands of students fill the shared houses in the middle, and the old industrial east still hums with workshops and units.
The job in one is nothing like the job in the next. Most of our Sheffield work falls into a few clear worlds, and after more than 20 years across South Yorkshire we know our way around each of them.
The student city: EICRs, HMOs and landlord safety at scale
With two universities and whole streets of shared houses around them, Sheffield has one of the busiest rental markets in the North, and a lot of our work here is keeping it safe and legal. Around Crookesmoor, Broomhill, Crookes and Ecclesall Road in particular, terrace after terrace is given over to student lets and HMOs.
If you let a property in England, an EICR every five years is the law, and shared houses and HMOs carry tighter rules again, with parts of the city needing extra licensing for rented homes.
We test the fixed wiring, hand over a clear certificate, and quote for any remedial work up front rather than burying it in the report, all at the pace letting agents and portfolio landlords actually need.
A house shared by six students draws a good deal more than the family home it was built as, so we often turn up an overloaded board or tired circuits that want bringing up to scratch, and we make sure the smoke and heat alarms a let like that must have are working while we are there. Period and character homes on the west side
Out towards Fulwood, Ranmoor, Nether Edge, Dore and Totley the housing changes completely: big stone Victorian and Edwardian homes, many of them extended, updated and much loved. Work on these takes a lighter touch.
A rewire has to go in without tearing up cornicing and original floors, and an extension or a loft conversion needs its electrics thought through early rather than squeezed in at the end.
These are also the homes where people invest for the long term, so it is often here we are fitting an electric-car charger on the drive, or solar and a battery on a big south-facing roof to bring the bills down. We size that sort of work to the house and the way you use it rather than to the biggest quote.
On a big older property the supply and the fuse board sometimes need a little attention first so they can take a 7kW charger comfortably, and we sort that as part of the job rather than springing it on you later. You can see how we approach both on our EV charging and solar and battery pages.
Terraces, cellars and the hillside streets
Climb into Walkley, Crookes, Hillsborough, Heeley or Sharrow and you are back among the solid terraces that Sheffield was built on. Plenty of them still run on wiring that has quietly had its day: no earth to the lighting, an old fuse box under the stairs, and nowhere near enough sockets for the way we live now.
The saving grace is that many Sheffield terraces have a cellar, which gives us a tidy route to run new cables with far less chasing into your walls. A rewire or a new consumer unit brings the house safely up to standard, and we plan it around you so you are never camped in one room for a fortnight.
Being built up the slopes, these houses often run over three or four floors, so we make sure the circuits and protection suit the whole property rather than just the rooms you use most. The wider installation work is on our electrical installations page.
Workshops, offices and the city's commercial side
Sheffield made its name on making things, and that industrial streak is still there, from the workshops and units of the east end to the offices and shops of the city centre. We take on commercial and light-industrial work across the city: lighting and small-power for fit-outs, three-phase supplies, fault-finding, and fixed-wire testing for units and offices.
For places already trading we look after the ongoing safety side too, from emergency lighting to periodic inspection, worked around your opening hours. And because we are only up the road, we can get back quickly if anything ever needs a second look.
Covering a big city from just up the north
We will be straight with you about geography. Our base is up in the Dearne Valley, north of the city, so we are quickest to the north and east of Sheffield and still get across to the west and south for booked work.
