An EV charger installation in Barnsley is rarely just a box on a wall. The borough runs from dense ex-coalfield terraces with no drive at all, through post-war estates, out to the villages past Penistone where the parking can sit a long way from the consumer unit. Your supply decides more than the charger does

A 7kW charger pulls around 32 amps, and that has to coexist with everything else in the house. The number that governs it is the rating of your main fuse, and in most houses that will be 60, 80 or 100. A good deal of older Barnsley housing is still on 60, which was generous when it went in and is tight once a car joins an electric shower and an induction hob.

That does not mean you cannot have a charger. It means the charger has to know about it. Load management, which most decent units now support, watches the incoming supply and eases the car back whenever household demand climbs, then lets it pick up again once the house quietens down overnight.

It is invisible in use, and it is very often the difference between a straightforward job and a supply upgrade. Where an upgrade genuinely is needed it becomes an application to Northern Powergrid, and their lead time rather than the cost of the charger is what tends to set your date. If the board is near the end of its life anyway, doing the consumer unit and the charger on one visit avoids paying twice for the same access.

The earthing rule that decides whether you need a rod in the garden

Most Barnsley homes are on a PME supply, also written TN-C-S, where the incoming neutral and earth share one conductor. Indoors that is perfectly sound. Outdoors, with a car attached to it, there is a specific fault worth designing against: if that shared conductor goes open circuit somewhere out in the network, metalwork connected to it can rise to a dangerous voltage, and a car on charge is a large piece of metalwork somebody might be touching.

BS 7671 handles this in regulation 722.411.4.1. A PME earthing facility cannot be the sole means of earthing an outdoor charge point unless one of two things is provided: a supplementary earth electrode, which is the rod in the garden people have heard about, or a PEN fault detection device that disconnects the supply if it sees the fault developing.

In practice rods are far less common than they used to be, because most current chargers have that detection built into the unit. It is not universal, though, and what you need depends on your earthing arrangement as much as on the charger you pick. Establishing which arrangement you actually have is part of the survey. It is not something anybody should be finding out on installation day.

Barnsley parking: drives, shared yards, and streets with neither

Three situations, three answers. A private drive or garage is the simple case, and most of the estate housing falls into it. A shared yard or a back lane behind a terrace is the awkward one, because the wiring is easy but the permission is not: you need to be sure the space is yours to fit to and that the cable route does not cross somebody else's land. We would far rather raise that at the quote than after.

Then there are the streets with no off-street parking at all, which covers a lot of Monk Bretton, Lundwood and the older terraced rows. A charger cannot legally run a cable across a public footway, so that becomes a cross-pavement job: a channel set into the path, with the council's agreement behind it. 7kW or 22kW, tethered or untethered

Almost every home should fit 7kW. A 22kW unit needs a three-phase supply, which very few houses here have, and even where one exists most cars cannot accept 22kW of AC anyway. A 7kW charger adds roughly 20 to 30 miles of range an hour depending on the car and the weather, so a night on charge covers considerably more than an average day's driving.

Tethered means the cable is permanently attached; untethered means you plug your own in. Tethered is more convenient day to day, untethered is tidier, cheaper to replace when a cable gets damaged, and does not tie you to today's connector if you change car. Neither is more correct than the other.

The decision that matters more is where the unit is mounted, because a charger on the wrong side of the house leaves you with either a long trailing lead to the car or a long cable run back to the board.

Workplaces, fleets and public sector

Barnsley Council is among the organisations we have worked for, and workplace charging is a different exercise to a house. It starts with the incoming supply and the building's existing load rather than with the parking, because a bank of sockets is a serious addition to demand.

It usually ends up being a staged conversation: ducting and capacity put in now, sockets added as the fleet turns over, so you are not paying twice to dig the same trench.

The Workplace Charging Scheme is worth up to £500 a socket on up to 40 sockets. State-funded schools have their own version of it, reduced to £2,000 a socket from April 2026 and running a final year to 31 March 2027, also capped at 40. Both are claimed by the installer and come off the invoice rather than being paid to you.

Occasionally and carefully, yes, but not as a routine. A granny lead draws around 10 amps continuously for hours, which is a duty no ordinary domestic socket was designed around, and the usual failure is heat at a worn or loose socket rather than anything dramatic. Never run one through an extension lead or a reel. If you are doing it at all, use a socket in good condition on its own, keep an eye on whether the plug feels warm, and treat it as a stopgap.

Yes, and it is one of the better reasons to have a smart unit. A charger that can see your generation will use surplus solar rather than exporting it, either topping the car up only on what the panels are making or blending in a little from the grid to keep the session going. It suits daytime charging and home working far more than an overnight commuter pattern. If you are considering both, plan them together, because the sequencing and the wiring are simpler than retrofitting one to the other. Usually yes, on two grounds. Day to day, charging at home on an overnight tariff costs a fraction of public rapid charging, so the unit tends to pay for a good part of itself before you go. And a certified, properly installed charge point is now something buyers look for rather than a curiosity. What we would say is to fit a sensible mainstream unit and keep the certificate with the house papers, because an unbranded charger with no paperwork adds far less than it cost.
