The final figure depends on the charger you pick, how far it sits from your fuse board, and whether your supply needs any extra work to take it safely.

How much does it cost to install a home EV charger in 2026?
For a standard 7kW wall charger on a house with off-street parking, expect a fitted price in the £800 to £1,500 range.
That price is really two things rolled together: the charger unit itself, and the labour and materials to install it properly.
The charger unit: roughly £400 to £800 depending on brand and features. A basic untethered smart charger sits at the lower end; a tethered unit with a built-in cable, app control and solar integration costs more.
The installation: roughly £350 to £700 for a typical fit, covering the dedicated circuit, protective devices, cable run, mounting and testing.

What actually changes the price?
Two identical chargers can cost very different amounts to fit, and it almost always comes down to the same handful of factors.
Distance from the fuse board: the longer the cable run from your consumer unit to the charger, the more cable and labour involved. A charger next to the board is cheap; one at the far end of the house is not.
The state of your consumer unit: if your fuse board has a spare way and is up to current standards, we simply add the circuit. If it is full or older, the charger may need its own small enclosure alongside it, which adds cost.
Getting the cable across the property: a clip-and-clean run along a wall is straightforward. Crossing a driveway or lifting paving to bury a cable means groundworks, and that is where prices climb.
Your main supply: most homes handle a 7kW charger, but where the main fuse is tight we fit load management so the charger eases off when the shower or oven is running. That avoids an expensive supply upgrade.
Tethered or untethered, and the brand: a fixed cable is convenient but costs more, and premium brands carry a premium price. None of that changes how well it charges your car.
What does a typical quote look like?
To make the numbers real, here is an illustrative breakdown for a common job: a 7kW untethered smart charger fitted to an outside wall a few metres from the consumer unit. Your own quote will differ, but the shape is usually similar.
Smart 7kW charger unit: around £450 to £650.
Dedicated circuit, protection and materials: around £200 to £350.
Labour, mounting, testing and certification: around £200 to £300.
Possible extras: a longer cable run, a consumer unit change, or groundworks to cross a drive, each added only if your property genuinely needs it.

Are there any grants for a home EV charger in 2026?
This is the question we get asked most, and the honest answer is: it depends who you are.
Homeowners with a driveway: the old grant for owner-occupiers closed back in 2022, so if you own a house with off-street parking you will usually pay the full cost today.
Flat owners and renters: the EV chargepoint grant is still open. At the time of writing it can cover up to 75% of the cost of buying and fitting a socket, capped at £350. You need your own off-street parking space.
Landlords: there is a separate chargepoint grant aimed at landlords fitting sockets across rented properties, worth claiming if you manage more than one home.
No driveway at all: some councils help fund on-street and cross-pavement solutions. It is patchy by area, so it is worth a quick check with your local authority.
One caveat worth stating plainly: grant schemes and their amounts change often. Treat any figure here as a starting point, check the current rules on gov.uk, or just ask us and we will tell you exactly what is live when we quote.
Do you need a 7kW or a 22kW charger at home?
Almost every home should fit a 7kW charger, and here is why. A 22kW charger needs a three-phase electricity supply, which the vast majority of UK houses do not have.
On top of that, most electric cars can only accept up to 7kW or 11kW of alternating-current charging anyway, so a 22kW unit would not charge them any faster.
A 7kW charger adds roughly 25 to 30 miles of range per hour, which comfortably refills a car overnight. Unless you have a genuine three-phase supply and a car that can use it, paying extra for 22kW at home is money spent on a number you will never reach.
What does it cost to charge an EV at home?
The installation is a one-off; the charging is the ongoing cost, and this is where a home unit really earns its keep.
On a standard tariff, a full charge roughly equals your unit rate multiplied by the size of the battery, so a 60kWh car costs about 60 times whatever you pay per kWh in the day.
The bigger saving comes from a dedicated EV tariff. Most home chargers are smart, so they can be set to fill up overnight on a cheap off-peak rate.
On a good EV tariff an overnight charge can cost a fraction of daytime electricity, and far less than a public rapid charger. That gap between charging at home off-peak and paying public prices is what quietly pays your installation back.
What should a proper installation include?
A charge point is a high-power circuit running outdoors in all weathers, so the install matters as much as the box on the wall. A job done right includes all of this as standard:

Ask for an itemised quote. You should be able to see the charger, the install and any extras separately, so you know what you are paying for.
Check the install is notified and certificated. A price that looks too good sometimes skips the network notification or the correct protection. That is not a saving, it is a risk.
Do not pay for power you cannot use. Be wary of anyone upselling a 22kW unit for a standard home.
