A working town with two sides to keep wired
Barnsley is two things at the same time. There is the market town, with its busy commercial centre, the markets, the Glass Works and business parks strung around the edges. Then, wrapped around all of that, there is mile after mile of former coalfield housing.
Most electricians are really set up for one or the other. We do both, which is exactly what a town shaped like this one needs. Every job is done to BS7671, we are NICEIC-approved and fully insured, and we are rated 5.0 on Google by the people we have worked for across the borough.
The housing: terraces and estates that have outgrown their wiring
Barnsley's houses tell the story of the coalfield. Long rows of solid ex-pit terraces sit alongside big postwar council estates, from Athersley and Kendray to Worsbrough and Kingstone, and a great many of those were bought from the council years ago and have never had the wiring touched since.
The common thread is a system built for a lighter age: no earth to the lighting, the odd round-pin socket still in place, a black fuse box with pull-out fuses under the stairs, and one or two sockets in a room that now has a television, a console and three chargers fighting over them.
Bringing that forward is the bread and butter of what we do here. Sometimes it is a full rewire, sometimes just a modern consumer unit with the right protection and a handful of extra circuits where you actually need them.
A proper inspection tells you which, and we would rather show you what we have found than talk you into work you do not need. Either way we plan it around you, run cables through the cellar and loft where a terrace allows it to save your plaster, and never leave you without power overnight. The full range is on our electrical installations page.
Barnsley's commercial side, from the team that also does the houses
What marks Barnsley out from the villages around it is how much commercial work there is, and we take it on properly rather than as a sideline. That means shop and office fit-outs around the town centre and the Glass Works, lighting and small-power design, three-phase supplies, fault-finding, and fixed-wire testing for units out on the business parks. We like to be in early on a fit-out so the power, data and lighting are never the thing holding an opening date up.
For places already trading, we look after the ongoing safety side too, from emergency lighting checks to periodic fixed-wire inspection, worked around your opening hours instead of across them.
We are happy to work alongside your builder or shopfitter on a bigger project and pick up just the electrical package, or take the whole job from first fix to final test. Because the same electricians do the domestic work, you get someone who talks to you in plain English rather than hiding behind the jargon.
Letting a property in Barnsley
Barnsley has a genuine rental market: town-centre flats, shared houses near the college, and family lets right across the estates.
If you let a property in England, an EICR every five years is the law, and it is your name on the certificate. We test the fixed wiring, give you a straight report, and quote for anything that needs putting right rather than dressing it up.
We also know the tighter rules that apply to HMOs, so if you run one we will make sure it meets them. Agents and portfolio landlords across the town use us for the quick turnaround and paperwork that stands up, all covered on our testing and inspection page.
Bringing an older home up to the way you live now
Plenty of Barnsley homeowners are improving rather than moving, and an older house takes some bringing forward. That might be an electric-car charger on the drive, wired on its own circuit and certificated the way it should be, or solar and a battery to take the sting out of the bills, or simply enough sockets and a modern board so nothing trips when the kettle and the oven are both going.
We size the work to the house and the household rather than to the biggest possible quote, and we will tell you honestly where the money is worth spending and where it is not. It is also worth thinking a step ahead: while the floor is up for a rewire is the cheap moment to add the circuit for a charger or an outbuilding you might want later. You can see how we handle both on our EV charger installation and solar and battery pages.
Across the whole borough, and quick when something goes wrong
Barnsley is a big patch and we cover it, from the town itself out to Wombwell, Hoyland, Dodworth, Darton, Royston and towards Penistone. When a board keeps tripping, a socket goes dead, or an outdoor circuit gives up after a wet spell, that is usually the wiring trying to tell you something, so we find the cause rather than resetting it and hoping.
Being only a few miles away in the Dearne Valley means we get there quickly and keep the callout sensible. Take a look at the other areas we cover, or get a free quote and we will talk the job through with you in plain English.
